Planet Earth is showing definitive signs of global warming and climate change caused by ambient temperature rises around the globe. The effects of global warming, and how to deal with them, will probably be one of the biggest challenges faced by governments in the 21^st century.

In a recent report the UK government has clearly warned the countries health system (NHS) to expect, and be prepared for many thousands of deaths over the next five years, directly attributable to global warming.

The report was written by professionals within the UK’s Health Protection Agency and is titled “Health Effects of Climate Change in the UK”. This document has now been issued to all medical institutions within the UK’s National Health System (NHS.) as being an official government advisory statement.

Throughout the history of planet Earth it has experienced many cycles of warming and cooling periods over hundreds of thousands of years. Primarily the polar bear is a marine mammal but both of its living and feeding habits are land based. This is why the effects of global warming on the natural environment of the polar bear, the arctic region, pose a serious threat to the well being of the animal.

Global Warming Effects on the Polar Bear.

Projections issued by the US Geological Survey indicate that by the year 2050 about 70% of the current polar bear population will have disappeared, largely for the following reasons, but all caused by global warming in the Arctic region.

-          Large reductions in population size.

-          Melting ice shelves are moving further apart and environmental swimming conditions are now becoming dangerous.

Global warming is caused by many factors, the biggest of which are the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The emissions of carbon dioxide gas from transport vehicles which burn fossil fuels are the largest contributor to what is commonly know as the greenhouse effect. This has lead to an increase in global surface temperatures.

Among many other impacts currently being experienced, global warming is having an effect on the southern polar region of Antarctica which not only is having serious consequences in the area, but will eventually affect the entire planet.

The greatest effect global warming in Antarctica is having today is the effect of melting snow and ice in the Antarctica Peninsular. Huge masses of ice are now regularly breaking off the land mass with ice shelves melting and sliding into the ocean.

We seem to live in an age when ‘conspiracy theories and hoaxes’ are the in thing. Conjecture about the Apollo moon landing, the tragic events of 9/11, and now that the whole business of global warming and climate change is a hoax. Allegedly perpetrated by environmentalists, big business, and governments for heaven knows what reason.

It is hard to imagine the idea of such a hoax being believed by some people, just witness the events taking place on our planet today, or are the pictures seen on TV’s around the world of the horrendous flooding in Pakistan a hoax also?

The plain answer is there is no hoax. Global Warming for whatever reason is a fact, and is with us for the foreseeable future.

The effects of global warming are developing into a serious environmental issue which is affecting rainforest ecosystems. The relationship between rainforests and global warming may not at first seem obvious, but they are in fact quite widespread.

Rainforests and Global Warming.

-          Tropical rainforests require a great deal of moisture to ensure their growth and survival. Changes in rainfall patterns worldwide resulting from climate changes, are causing some forested areas to have less rain, which leads to a reduced forest cover.

It was in 1896 that the first claims were made that burning fossil fuels would lead to global warming. The Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius made this claim whilst doing research in establishing the connection between carbon dioxide and previous ice ages.

Arrhenius had established that the natural surface temperature of Earth was about 15 degrees C because of the greenhouse effect, and proposed that a doubling of the atmospheric carbon dioxide gas would lead to a 5 degree C increase in surface temperature.

Later he and a fellow researcher named Thomas Chamberlain suggested that human activities could increase Earth’s surface temperatures by adding CO2 to the atmosphere. Thus the history of global warming began in 1896.

The most recent projections issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicate that planet Earth will suffer a temperature increase of 1.4 – 5.8 degrees centigrade between 1990 and 2100.

The causes of this warming are not exactly known, but the large part of scientific opinion suggests that it is caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human industrial activities.

This warming will have many implications for climatic conditions, some of which are already evident.

During 2003 Europe suffered a big heat wave with temperatures zooming to 40 degrees centigrade resulting in about 35,000 deaths. There have been many severe storms across America. In very recent times there has been widespread flooding in Pakistan and China with rampant wild brush fires in Australia.
